Greece has a wonderful climate with average temperatures ranging from approximately 7 to 32 degrees celcius in the capital Athens. The temperature in Greece is generally much milder on the islands in winter than it is on the mainland where as in the summer the mainland can be very hot and the islands offer cooler air from the sea. This is similar to the effect of continentality on the temperature in Spain. In the west of Greece temperatures in Corfu range from 5 to 31 degrees on average where as in the east of Greece on the Island of Lesvos the temperature is between 6 and 29 degrees. Further south the temperature in Kos ranges between 9 and 30 degrees where as Rhodes still further south has an average temperature between 7 and 32 degrees.

Due to it's geography there is some variety in average temperature. On the mainland temperatures are quite cold in the winter time as compared with the average temperature in Portugal which is considerably milder especially in the Algarve, the Azores and the Island of Madeira. For example in the north of Greece in Thessaloniki average temperatures range between 1 and 10 degrees celcius which is considerably colder then the temperature in crete where one can expect winter temperatures of between 9 and 17 degrees.

Greece offers an ideal climate with plenty of warm sunshine most of the year although it is not ideal in the winter time where temperatures are quite cool and snowfall can be expected on the mountains. Head to the south for the warmest temperatures in Greece and avoid the capital in summer when high temperatures esacerbate the pollution.
